Privacy, Terms & Copyright

Last updated: 22 October 2026

Please read this first. This app is a personal journal tool. It keeps your entries on your own device. It is not a medical, psychological, legal or financial service. If you are in crisis or thinking about harming yourself, contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 (Australia), or call 000 in an emergency.

1. Privacy Policy

1.1 Who we are

This application is operated by [Owner / Business Name], [Business address], [ABN, if applicable]. Contact: [contact email].

1.2 What we collect

The diary does not have accounts and does not send your diary entries, photos or voice recordings to our servers. The app does not collect your name, email or location. Your data is stored only in your browser on your device, in these places:

1.3 Voice typing

Voice typing uses the speech recognition service built into your browser or operating system (for example Chrome, Edge or Safari). Depending on your device and settings, the audio may be processed by that provider, such as Google or Apple, and not by us. Please check your browser's privacy policy. You can avoid this by typing instead.

1.4 Photos and scanning

Photos and scans are stored on your device. Scanned text is recognised in your browser using the open-source Tesseract.js engine. The first time you use scanning, the engine and its language data are downloaded from the jsDelivr content delivery network (cdn.jsdelivr.net). That download reveals your IP address and basic browser details to jsDelivr, as with any website request. The scanned image itself is not uploaded.

1.5 Permissions

The app may ask for access to your microphone (voice typing) and camera or photo library (photos and scans). You can refuse these permissions. The related features will then not work, but the rest of the app will still work.

1.6 PIN lock

The optional PIN is a convenience lock for people who share a device. It is stored as a SHA-256 hash in your browser. It is not encryption. Anyone with access to the device's browser storage, developer tools or an unlocked device may be able to read your entries.

1.7 Backups and deletion

You control your data. Use Settings → Export backup to save a copy as a JSON file. Backup files are not encrypted. Store them securely. Clearing your browser data, uninstalling the app or losing your device may permanently delete your diary unless you have a backup. We cannot recover deleted or lost entries.

1.8 Sharing and third parties

We do not sell, rent or share your personal information. The only third-party services involved are the optional voice-recognition service of your browser or device, and the jsDelivr CDN used to load the scanning engine.

1.9 Privacy law

Where the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) applies, we handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. Because the app stores data only on your device, we do not hold your diary content. If you have a privacy question or complaint, contact us at the address above. You may also contact the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).

1.10 Children

The app is intended for general adult and family use. Parents and guardians are responsible for any use by children under 16.

1.11 Changes

We may update this policy. The date at the top shows when it was last changed. Continued use of the app after a change means you accept the updated policy.

2. Terms of Use

2.1 Acceptance

By using the Digital Diary app or website, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please stop using the app.

2.2 Personal use

The app is provided for personal, non-commercial journaling. You may install it on your own devices. You may not use it to harm others, to store unlawful content, to attempt to access other people's data, or to interfere with the app or its security.

2.3 Your content

You own the content you write, speak, photograph or scan. You are responsible for it, and for making sure you have the right to store any third-party material (such as copied text, images or documents) you include.

2.4 Responsibility for backups

Because your data is stored on your device, you are responsible for backing it up. We are not liable for loss of data caused by device failure, browser changes, clearing site data, app removal, forgotten PINs or user error.

2.5 Availability

We try to keep the app available and working, but we do not guarantee that it will always be uninterrupted, error-free or compatible with every device or browser. Features such as voice typing and OCR depend on third-party browser features and services that we do not control.

2.6 Warranty disclaimer

The app is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Nothing in these Terms excludes any consumer guarantee that cannot lawfully be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. Where a guarantee applies and the law permits, our liability is limited to re-supplying the service or paying the cost of having it re-supplied.

2.7 Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, including loss of data, loss of profits or emotional distress, arising from your use of the app.

2.8 Termination

You may stop using the app at any time by deleting your data and uninstalling it. We may stop providing the app or change these Terms at any time. Changes take effect when posted.

2.9 Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of Queensland, Australia. Courts of Queensland have non-exclusive jurisdiction.

3. Disclaimer

4.1 Ownership of the app

Except as permitted by law or by these Terms, you may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, reverse engineer or create derivative works from the app.

4.2 Your content

Your diary entries, photos and scans remain yours. We claim no ownership of them.

4.3 Third-party software

The app uses third-party open-source software, including Tesseract.js (Apache License 2.0), which is loaded from a public CDN when you use the scanning feature. Each third-party component remains subject to its own licence, which is available from its publisher.

4.4 Trademarks

4.5 Reporting copyright concerns

If you believe content in this app infringes your copyright, please contact us at [contact email] with a description of the material, where it appears, and your contact details. We will review and respond as promptly as we can.
